About This Site

This database documents the Digg Patriots, a covert ultra-conservative effort to suppress liberal views and promote extremist right-wing propaganda on the social news site Digg.

The Digg Patriots used a private Yahoo! Group to disseminate thousands of messages to dozens of members for over a year. In addition to daily digg and bury orders, many discussed subverting site rules, escaping lifetime bans, and slandering political enemies.

Upon their August 5, 2010 exposure, the Digg Patriots deleted their group, retreating to a private Skype channel for future discussion. Luckily, nearly 13,000 posts were saved, and are presented here as a permanent record of their activities.

We invite you to browse and judge for yourself the nature of the Digg Patriots, the culpability of their members, and the shape of their strategy, in order to better recognize future incursions. We hope it helps foster a more honest and open social media environment.

Note: Personal information has been redacted where possible to discourage stalking and harassment.

Memorable Quotes:

"To all of our new group members: We are really happy you have joined us at DiggPatriots!

Please remember this is a group that we are trying to keep below the radar. Please do not disclose this group痴 existence to anyone outside the group on Digg or elsewhere. The longer we can keep this group on the down low, the better. I know you probably aready knew that, but I wanted to make sure we are all on the same page as far as the keeping this group from being exposed to the public."

"...does that make what we do right? To fight for what is right and just, I would say yes. Hopefully more people will see our beliefs as the right way. We're called the right for a reason."

"Digg is not going to do anything to our group It is private and they would have to subpoena all the emails to prove we call for buries."
